0 4 Descension

Descension was first exhibited in New York in May 2017 as the 40th anniversary exhibition of the Public Art Foundation, and designer Anish Kapoor’s most striking work, ‘Vortex’. Placed in Brooklyn Bridge Park, the artwork features a giant swirling funnel of special materials that contrasts sharply with the adjacent East River.
It is a large-scale outdoor sculptural work consisting of a rotating giant circular vortex that appears to collapse into a bottomless centre. The constant rotational movement of the water along the 8 metre diameter vortex represents the powerful physical form of being sucked into the earth. The artwork gives the viewer a fascinating sense of seeing permanent black water being pulled into the unknown, and based on the viewer’s own experience, they will have a different understanding of what the installation conveys. The Vortex creates a negative and dynamic space of descending ground, breaking down our familiar perceptions of boundaries. Located in the heart of a New York City park, Anish Kapoor’s installation is an extraordinary form of stimulating our perception of pure nature.
